What Is PTSD?
Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder is a mental health condition that develops after experiencing or witnessing a terrifying, life-threatening, or deeply distressing event. PTSD is not a sign of weakness โ it is a normal nervous system response to abnormal circumstances.
Acute PTSD
Symptoms appear within the first month following a traumatic event. Early intervention is critical โ prompt trauma-focused therapy significantly reduces the risk of symptoms becoming chronic.
Chronic PTSD
Symptoms persist for three months or longer. This is the most common presentation we treat. With structured therapy, lasting recovery is absolutely achievable even years after the original trauma.
Complex PTSD (C-PTSD)
Develops after prolonged, repeated trauma such as childhood abuse, domestic violence, or captivity. C-PTSD affects identity, emotional regulation, and relationships in ways that require specialized treatment.
Delayed-Onset PTSD
Symptoms emerge six months or more after the traumatic event โ sometimes triggered by a new stressor or life transition. This presentation is more common than many people realize.
Combat & Military Trauma
Veterans and active military personnel face unique trauma patterns, including moral injury and survivor's guilt. We provide culturally competent care that respects military experience.
Childhood & Relational Trauma
Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), neglect, and domestic violence create deep imprints on the developing nervous system. We address root-cause trauma alongside present-day symptoms.
Recognizing PTSD
PTSD symptoms fall into four main clusters. You do not need to have all of them to benefit from trauma therapy.
Intrusion Symptoms
Unwanted flashbacks that feel as real as the original event, intrusive memories, distressing nightmares, and intense emotional or physical reactions to trauma reminders (triggers).
Avoidance
Avoiding thoughts, feelings, people, places, or activities that are connected to the trauma. Emotional numbing, detachment from loved ones, and loss of interest in previously enjoyed activities.
Hypervigilance & Hyperarousal
Persistent sense of danger even when safe, exaggerated startle response, difficulty concentrating, irritability, angry outbursts, and serious sleep disturbances including insomnia.
Negative Cognitions & Mood
Distorted beliefs about oneself or the world ("I am bad," "nowhere is safe"), persistent shame, guilt, horror, or fear, and feeling permanently changed or estranged from others.

Frequently Asked Questions
The duration of PTSD treatment varies significantly based on the type and severity of trauma, how long symptoms have been present, and individual factors. Many people with single-incident trauma (such as an accident or assault) see meaningful improvement within 12โ20 sessions of trauma-focused CBT. Complex PTSD from prolonged or childhood trauma typically requires longer treatment โ often 6 months to a year or more. We will discuss realistic timelines at your initial consultation and re-evaluate regularly throughout treatment.
Many people achieve full remission from PTSD โ meaning their symptoms resolve to a point where PTSD no longer significantly impacts their daily life. This is a realistic goal for most people with proper treatment. Others manage PTSD as a condition that improves substantially but requires ongoing self-care and occasional therapeutic support. The critical point: PTSD is highly treatable. You do not have to live in survival mode indefinitely.
This is one of the most common fears people have about seeking PTSD therapy, and it deserves a direct answer. You are never required to describe your trauma in graphic detail. Our approach begins by building safety, stabilization, and coping resources before any trauma processing work. Somatic and grounding-based techniques can achieve deep trauma processing with minimal verbal retelling of events. We always work at your pace and within your window of tolerance.
